Jack Black is a DJ, apparently.

That isn’t Jack Black, that is Colin Hanks’ brother from Orange County

Okay. Admittedly, I’m an old fart, but I jumped about a minute at a time through about 12 minutes of this video and this guy never did anything except dance around and turn a dial now and then. It’s all rhythm. Where’s the melody? Did they pay this guy to set up a glorified drum machine?

I don’t mind! I understand your comment.

Turn a dial now and then, well he know’s what he wants to play. The only thing he needs to do is mix it fluently. And picking the right songs is important too.

Melody is not a big part of this sort of music, although I can hear a lot of melodies throughout the set!

Maybe you like this? Has more melody to it, sounds “fresh”.

That was my point. I never heard a “song.” But, as I said, I jumped through, but I only ever heard subtle changes of the beat pattern.

It is hard to recognize the songs, that’s true. But I can recognize some songs, but that’s only because I listen to it (a lot).

Someone commented the tracklist, maybe that helps! :)

As a professional musician (classical), I actually find this fascinating. Because if you step back and look at what’s going on here, it’s music that is meant to be heard but not necessarily listened to. And I’m not saying that as a criticism. The music creates an atmosphere, or a mood, and the DJ can change things up by adjusting the tempo, thump, etc. What’s also interesting is that both DJs are using almost the exact same tempo, about 124 bpm (give or take a beat). It’s a tempo that encourages movement, and only slightly faster than a standard march tempo. It’s ambience, it creates a mood, it gets people moving, but it isn’t necessarily designed to hold their attention. It is kind of relentlessly in the same key, though.

You’ve explained that spot on. I completely agree with you!
